This is the 2nd post in the SMART Goals Series
In the last post we discovered that our goals need to be defined down to the details when trying to figure out how we are ever going to reach them. Today we are going to tackle M – is for measureable. “I want to be happy” is not measurable, How happy? How often do you want to be in this state? How will you know when you get there? Measureable goals works with the specificity. “I want to be rich” vs. I want to make $100,000 a year salary. In the mobile home case study there are a ton of measureable goals. To make it measurable you could set a goal of – Find out exactly how much money I need to be able to live in my dream house.
In this workstep you would find out how much money it costs for the land (including closing costs, all extra fees, interest, commissions, everything) and to accomplish this goal you could call some real estate agents and ask them what other fees and costs would be added to the purchase price of a piece of land.
Then you want to think about the type of home you want, are you purchasing used or new? What is the cost of moving one? Registering it legally with the state? Does you land have any restrictions as to the type of house? Each one of these goals is a measurable one because you can define if it was achieved or not.
Finding out the information for each of your questions is an achieved goal. Darn, just writing down your questions is a measurable (yes or no,) achievable – Create a list of questions – goal for the week, that’s a lot of research! And A for Achievable is the next step.
You can’t say “I want to buy a house” and leave it at that. That’s too ambiguous and leaves way to many days or years without a success. There’s nothing wrong with this being a long term goal, infact; it’s a great long term goal to set. “I want to buy my dream house by the end of next year” is a wonderful smart goal. The secret to making this work is breaking the big dream down into smart steps so that you can build on your successes each day. Achievable – I want to fly like a bird. Well, that’s not so achievable in the literal sense but…..you can – Learn to skydive. That’s achievable.
Next time we will go through R and T and finish up with some wise words from a chick who knows of what she writes of. 🙂 Read the 3rd post Here! (link will be added when post is finished)
